Too often, families who do not qualify for free legal services opt not to hire an attorney because of the costs. The College of Law’s FIU Law Practice is our low bono initiative to bridge the access to justice faced by low- and moderate-income Miami-Dade county families.

Through public awareness and strategic community outreach, we aim to establish strong connections with local community organizations, such as governmental agencies, non-profits, religious and educational institutions, and other pro bono groups.

Who is eligible?

FIU Law Practice assists families falling within the 125% and 200% poverty guidelines. Our program charges eligible clients using a sliding scale based on a client’s ability to pay and offers flexible installment plans.

We utilize the legal clinic’s current screening process to confirm eligibility based upon federal poverty guidelines and levels.

Please note we currently only specialize in the Family Law area of Guardianship.

Apprenticeship Opportunities

In a constantly changing legal world, the profession expects law students to graduate with the ability to seamlessly transition into practice, becoming an immediate contributor to their new law firm or solo practice.

Not unlike medical residency programs or business incubator strategies, FIU Law Practice seeks to cultivate two fellows with the extensive training, mentoring and close case management supervision they need to become successful attorneys.

The apprenticeship program is open to recent FIU Law graduates who have been admitted to the Florida Bar.
