Biography
Barbara Ballan is an Assistant Professor of Law at Florida International University College of Law, where she teaches Ocean & Coastal Law, Natural Resources Law, and Environmental Law. Her scholarship explores the intersection of corporate and environmental law, with particular emphasis on sustainability reporting frameworks, climate-related disclosures, consumer fraud, securities laws and regulations, and environmental justice metrics. Professor Ballan also examines how corporate design and governance structures evolve to address contemporary environmental challenges.
Prior to joining FIU, Professor Ballan served as the inaugural Sustainable Business Law Fellow at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University’s Sustainable Business Law Hub, where she collaborated with cross-disciplinary experts to advance sustainability research initiatives. She has also held legal roles at the Argentinian Ministry of Culture, Attorney General’s Office in Buenos Aires, and at a boutique U.S. law firm specializing in environmental litigation and greenwashing claims. In addition, she worked with the Costa Rica Mission to the United Nations on sustainable development matters and has contributed to public-facing media on environmental issues.
At FIU, Professor Ballan is a member of the Environmental Finance & Risk Management (EFRM) Program. She also serves as Vice-Chair of the Environmental Justice team within the American Bar Association’s Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER) Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) & Sustainability Committee. An active member of the academic and professional community, she has presented her work at national and international conferences in the United States and Latin America.
Professor Ballan earned both an S.J.D. and an LL.M., summa cum laude, in Environmental Law from the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University in New York. She also holds an Environmental Law Diploma and a Law Degree from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
